Workshop Information:

The Shenandoah-Dives Mill HAER, HALS and NDT Workshop is taking place this summer in beautiful and legendary Silverton, Colorado. Located in the heart of the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado the area is famous for its Gilded Age hard rock mining camps. The Shenandoah-Dives Mill will be the “classroom” for a preservation workshop which will cover all aspects of Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) documentation, Historic American Landscape Survey and Non-Destructive Testing and materials assessment.  Scheduled presentations include:

 

·          HAER documentation, understanding the different levels

·          Creating measured drawings to HAER standards

·          Historic American Landscape Survey Documentation

·          Understanding structure and failure in historic buildings

·          Non-Destructive Technologies in wood and masonry structures

·          Demonstrations of new laser mapping technology and the use of x-rays in determining condition of the structure

·          Large Format photography and standards in HAER and HALS documentation

·          Historic research techniques

·          Principals of stabilization and preservation

·          Seminars on the development of the milling process defining the history of the hardrock milling process within a regional and national context.  Understanding this technology is crucial to HAER documentation of the engineered mill process

·          Historic archaeology field session to the Lewis is Mill and mining camp above Telluride, Colorado will be an option for those willing to hike at high elevations

·          Weather dependent alternative field sessions include: a tour of the mining camp of Animas Forks, and a walking tour of the architectural jewels of Silverton including the award winning restoration of the Silverton Town Hall
